Natural Oral Care
Did you know that vegans may have to look after their oral health more carefully compared to an average joe? It makes sense, actually. That’s because we often eat a lot more high-acidity and sugary (in a good way) foods! These are your fruits and other starchy foods (that’s because the body breaks them down to create sugar). As you already know from a very young age, sugar = cavities. Read more

That’s why we have to take extra care of your pearly whites! The toothbrush and toothpaste are the bare necessities for oral care. Both are needed in your daily oral care routine to keep your teeth shiny and healthy. But that shouldn’t stop there! Mouthwash, dental floss (remember to floss, people!), and even the occasional toothpick are part of good oral care.
You already know the deal, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day! That being said, it’s important that you have the right tools to build a good natural oral care regimen. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our favourite vegan and natural oral care products here at PlantX. Yes, there are vegan oral care products!
Why We Should Use Vegan Dental Products
General oral care products come aplenty. Vegan-friendly oral care products, however, are trickier to find! Don’t let yourself be fooled by fancy packaging and marketing jargon. At PlantX, we’ve collected only the best natural oral care products to help you with your oral care routine.
Plastics are a recycling problem. No matter how much companies say that plastics are recycled, plastic’s recyclability ends at a certain point. Your ordinary toothbrush, for example, is actually difficult to recycle. The plastic used to make them is harder to break down and would often cause more problems when trying to do so. By simply choosing a planet-friendly bamboo toothbrush, you’re already doing more help than you realise!
The Benefits of Vegan Oral Care Products
Vegan oral care products are often not only friendlier to the environment, but to our teeth! Vegan oral care products, as one can expect, are usually more gentler than non-vegan ones. Sometimes, harsh chemicals are added to make other oral care items more effective or taste better. That’s why we think plant-based are far superior. All-natural can still be as effective, especially when used properly!
Another benefit to vegan oral care products is that they are usually the go-to for people with sensitive gums and teeth. With the addition of some chemicals in other oral care products, it runs a risk of causing irritations or triggering an allergic response.
Oral Care Tips
With teeth, there really isn’t a single solution for all problems. There are tons out there. Some vegan oral care solutions are geared towards sensitive gums, whitening or even fresh breath. It’s up to you to know what you need!
The best natural oral care solution is simply just habit, in our opinion. If you keep your oral care routine daily, chances are your oral health will improve. Brushing your teeth once a week (goodness gracious) and expecting them to shine and sparkle is just not to be expected!
Let’s talk SLS. What is that? SLS is also known as sodium lauryl sulphate. You’ll see SLS a lot in toothpaste and other hygiene products. Ideally, you should get a toothpaste that’s free from it. SLS It’s the thing that makes toothpaste foam! It is also thought to potentially cause irritation.
Here are some of our recommendations for top-quality vegan and organic oral care products. You may want to try AloeDent’s Triple Action Charcoal Toothpaste or Himalaya’s Organic Neem & Pomegranate Toothpaste. Both are SLS-free
Once you have an idea of what oral care routine you’re going for (a trip to the dentist always helps!), it’s time to peruse the vegan oral care selections we have at PlantX!
Charcoal in Oral Care Products: Trend or Friend?
Charcoal has now become a common thing in oral care products, particularly toothpaste. But is it good to use? Well, kind of!
You won’t find a lot of dentists recommending charcoal toothpaste as a go-to. That’s because it may be too abrasive. Frequent use of charcoal oral care products could potentially even make your teeth more sensitive than they already are.
So is charcoal toothpaste bad? Not quite. You can enlist the help of charcoal toothpaste from time to time. How often depends on the amount of charcoal in it! As a general rule, it should not replace regular toothpaste in daily use. But occasional use may help with surface teeth stains and may help minimise bad breath. And yes, charcoal in oral care products is safe and you shouldn’t worry if you happen to ingest some - though this doesn’t mean you should snack on your tube of charcoal toothpaste!
Natural Oral Care Products To Try
While we did say that vegan oral care products are harder to find, we do have a few for you to choose from already! That’s right - we did all the work so that you can sit back, choose your oral care products, and wait for us to deliver them to you!
Himalaya’s Organic Neem & Pomegranate Toothpaste
We’re very thorough here at PlantX. After all our oral care tips, did you think we’d recommend a toothpaste that had SLS? Surely not! Himalaya’s Organic Neem & Pomegranate Toothpaste is fluoride-free and SLS free. Plus, the Neem Leaf extract is key for keeping your teeth clean and sparkly!
Kingfisher’s Naturally Whitening Charcoal Toothpaste
Like we said, charcoal toothpaste can be a friend! This charcoal toothpaste is British Dental Health Foundation Approved. It is even suitable for children! It helps whitens teeth and promotes oral health the au-natural way.
AloeDent’s Triple Action Charcoal Toothpaste
Another charcoal toothpaste worth checking out is AloeDent’s Triple Action Charcoal Toothpaste. It is free from fluoride, SLS, and artificial flavours. It even comes infused with tea tree oil to help you keep your breath fresh!
Ben & Anna’s Whitening Toothpaste
Proof that toothpaste doesn’t just come from a tube, Ben & Anna’s Whitening Toothpaste is a natural oral care product designed to reduce tooth discolourations and decay. It even comes with a handy, small spatula to help you get it on your toothbrush.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it necessary to floss every day?
It’s better to floss daily! Like brushing your teeth, flossing should ideally be done every day. It’s one of the more relatively low-cost oral care products that can improve your oral health significantly! Does that mean you should floss after every meal, every single time? No. That might actually do more harm than good. Just aim to do it once a day.
If you do miss a day of flossing, don’t worry. You should be a-ok.
Is lemon juice good for my teeth?
Lemon water might be a refreshing drink that can be perfect on a hot summer’s day, but it may cause some damage to our pearly whites and be bad for your oral health! How so? Its acidity may cause some enamel erosion.
You can limit the amount of impact this causes by drinking through a straw. You can also wash it down with some water.
Does natural mouthwash contain hydrogen peroxide?
Not all mouthwashes have hydrogen peroxide, such as this Sea Fresh Mouthwash by Jasons Natural. A lot of oral care products, including mouthwash, contain hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical solution or an antiseptic that people often gargle to soothe a sore throat, disinfect the mouth, and whiten teeth. As it comes, it may not be great for you. So, you need to dilute hydrogen peroxide with water before gargling (use a 1:2 ratio).
Can I use apple cider vinegar as a substitute for mouthwash?
Not as a substitute, but you could enlist a bottle of good ‘ol apple cider vinegar to kill any bacteria that may be in your mouth. Like with hydrogen peroxide, dilution is key. Two tablespoons to one cup of water is the ratio. This will give you a week’s worth of a quick rinse if you need it.
Why do I need to brush twice a day?
By brushing your teeth twice a day, you remove food and plaque from your mouth. Simply put, you’re removing bacteria!
That’s why it’s always best to brush once in the morning and once before you hit the hay to make sure all the stuff you’ve eaten throughout the day doesn’t stay inside your mouth! With natural oral care products, you keep your teeth and your mouth clean.
What kind of toothbrush should I get?
That totally depends on what your needs are. Your dentist can always help you with a recommendation on the best oral care products for you. You may have sensitive gums that require softer bristles, or you could just get your basic toothbrush. That also depends on how “hard” you brush your teeth. For the most part, soft bristles are great for daily use.
Do you have any natural oral care tips I can use?
One tip for organic oral care we could offer is to get a toothbrush that has the planet’s well-being in mind. Plastic waste is a huge concern and plastic toothbrushes just don’t help the cause.
This Medium Toothbrush from The Environmental Toothbrush is a great choice. It’s made with sustainable bamboo - not plastic!
What kind of toothpaste should I get?
That’s a fantastic question! And just like we said before, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for oral care. But here are some tips that you could use.
Get a toothpaste that solves your unique “problem”. Do you need a fresher-smelling breath? Do you have gum worries? Or do you just want something that’s 100% natural?
Green People also has a couple worth mentioning in its organic oral care line. Check out its 100% Natural Toothpaste and Organic Children Toothpaste!
