The Importance Of Having The Right Vegan Sauce

Getting the right vegan sauce to match every dish is essential, not only for the main course. That's because a good sauce can make or break your entree and even your side dish! Desserts can also be taken to the next level with a sweet vegan sauce. That's why selecting a good pre-made vegan sauce, or the ingredients for it, is so important!

What Sauces Are Vegan?

On this side of the pond, finding a good vegan sauce is a little bit tricky. Even though a lot of people live the vegan lifestyle, some aren't on board yet. That's why you need to look into what's on the ingredient list of gravies, skinny sauces, and vegan sauces.

In the continent of Asia, you'll find a lot more options for vegan sauces and skinny sauces. You'll notice that many soy sauce, curry sauce (usually), miso, and many other Asian sauces use plant-based ingredients already. That's also the main reason why there are so many of those Asian vegan sauces in the PlantX shop!

Sometimes, sauce labels don't clearly state that they're vegan. Why is that? Well, that may be because the majority of their market doesn't live the vegan lifestyle…yet! So, manufacturers don't feel the need to indicate that it’s a plant-based sauce.

That's why we strongly urge you to check the ingredient list - especially when a sauce looks delicious! Who knows? It may already be a plant-based sauce!

Tips and Tricks for Storing Vegan Sauces

For the most part, vegan sauces are shelf-stable. Soy sauce, vinegar, and similar vegan sauces can happily sit inside your kitchen cabinets until you need them. This is great if you use your sauces a lot and prefer not to go in and out of the fridge just to use them.

If you have bottles and jars of sauces and don’t cook that often, it is best to refrigerate them. By refrigerating your vegan sauces, especially homemade ones, you help extend their shelf life. When refrigerating them, it’s also best if you keep your vegan sauces in an airtight container. That will minimise cross contamination and will keep your vegan sauces fresher.

While we're on the topic, refrigeration could also affect the consistency of your vegan sauces - especially oil-based ones! Not to worry, they’ll “thaw” and go back to their original form once they sit at room temperature for a little bit.

When it comes to tomato-based vegan sauces, pasta sauce in particular, you can freeze them. This is good if you want to prepare ahead of time and just bring them out to heat if you need some.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy organic sauces?

At PlantX! We have some great organic vegan sauces. Organic sauces are great if you want to taste ingredients in their purest form. Organic vegan sauces usually are free from artificial preservatives or flavourings.

Where can I buy sauces without allergens?

At PlantX we have nut-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, and kosher vegan sauces if you’re looking for those. If you’re on our vegan sauce page, just check the filter panel on the left and tick the box that fits your needs!

Are vegan sauces full of preservatives?

Quite honestly, some are and some aren't. Those that aren't most likely don't need them. Take soy sauce, for example, which has gone through a long fermentation process. They don’t really need preservatives because the culture or bacteria prevents any bad cultures from developing.

Vegan sauces would likely contain fewer preservatives than their counterparts. That doesn’t mean they’re fully free from it, though. Some will have and need preservatives.

Is ketchup vegan?

You won’t be alone if you simply thought that ketchup, being mostly made from tomatoes, is vegan. But that’s not always true! You need to have hawk-like eyes to spot if your ketchup has any refined sugar. Refined sugar has a tendency to be made with bone char!

So, if you’re buying ketchup or any other vegan sauces, best get one that’s clearly been labelled as such - or just get them here! We have sauces that you can have when you’re maintaining a plant-based diet. Our team checks ingredients all the time, and you definitely won’t find non-vegan items here!
