Frequently Asked Questions

Are vital wheat gluten, wheat gluten and gluten flour the same thing?

Yes, the names are used interchangeably. However, Vital Wheat Gluten is not the same as regular flour so be sure not to use it as a replacement in recipes!

How long does homemade seitan last?

Once cooked, store seitan in an airtight container in the fridge and consume within 3 days.

What are the advantages of vital wheat gluten (seitan) as a meat alternative?

Although it’s made entirely out of gluten flour, seitan is actually high in protein and relatively low in carbohydrates! This is because it is made purely from gluten which is high in protein. This also makes it a great meat substitute for vegans looking to lower their carbohydrate intake. It also has a great bite to it and a texture that closely resembles meat leading to its nickname - “wheat meat”!
