Frequently Asked Questions

How is vegan soap made?

Most vegan soap is made in a very similar way to non-vegan soap. Lye (sodium hydroxide) is mixed with a solution of botanical oils and water. In traditional, non-vegan soap making some of the oils and fats used are derived from animals. In modern, vegan soap making these animal lipids and oils have been replaced with plant-derived lipids and oils.

The mixture of lye and oil solution is heated to 37° Celsius. At this temperature aromatic additions are made to the soap which will give it its scent and character at the end of the process. 

The soap is then poured into moulds and allowed to cool and set for at least 24 hours. The bars of soap are then removed from the moulds and allowed to cure for at least one month. It’s this curing time that allows the soap to form its bold scent and detergent properties.
