When it comes to plant-based milk alternatives, there are a few things to include on your checklist. From our experience, we think the most important ones are taste, nutrition and sustainability. So, how does hemp seed milk compare?
Hemp seed milk has an earthy, subtly nutty flavour with a creamy and full-bodied consistency. It’s excellent for swapping out with traditional cows milk and perfect for using in all sorts of recipes. Think smoothies, breakfast, hot drinks and any sort of vegan baking. It’s an all-around people pleaser!
Hemp seed milk is packed with healthy fats such as omega-3 and 6, plenty of vitamins and minerals and provides a good source of plant protein! It’s low in saturated fats and high in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats, ideal for those monitoring their daily fat intake. Plus, hemp seeds contain all 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential ones.
Although it’s relatively low in protein compared to other milk, Hemp seed milk is far more sustainable to grow and requires less energy to process. You can find it growing naturally in the wild, plus it requires little watering and soaks up four times more CO2 than trees! Hemp also doesn’t need a lot of space to grow in, so you can grow a lot more per km2 compared to other crops.
Yes! Good Hemp’s Milk provides both gluten-free and gluten options. The Creamy Hemp Milk is specifically for those who suffer from wheat allergies and coeliacs, whereas the Barista Milk contains malt extract. Good Hemp’s milk is also completely free from sugar, nuts and dairy, so if you suffer from any other allergy, this is the perfect milk for you.
No, but they do look very similar. Hemp and Marijuana plants are both cannabis plants. One of the main differences is that marijuana plants contain a load of THC (the psychoactive compound found in cannabis), whereas Hemp plants contain virtually nothing (under 0.3%).
Good Hemp uses Dipotassium Phosphate, a common food additive to help emulsify, stabilise and texturise drinks and foods. It’s generally regarded as safe and is typically used in very small amounts, so there’s very little to worry about!
In fact, most non-dairy milk contains emulsifiers. Whilst some people like to stay away from these, having the stabilisers stops the milk from splitting when it’s added to hot drinks. If you’re not a stranger to trying out non-dairy milk alternatives, we’re sure you know what we’re talking about!
